Final images

Perspective Drawings

Final Floorplans

Various layouts focusing mainly on the admission area on the left and how the space can be used to enhance the space and attempt to solve or improve the queuing problems.
Final floorplans of the furniture layout. The admission area has been seperated from the gift shop as this will be more formal and is clearer for customers entering the building. With 3 seperate tills in this area, it will improve queuing from having only 2 tills for admissions and the gift shop.

Projector layout

A layout of how the projectors will be set up. The projectors are attached to the ceiling and are at equal distances from the walls either side. At 4 metres away from the walls, the image size is 200 width x 150 height on for both projectors. Although the projectors arnt set up in the centre of the entrance doors, as they hung on the ceiling, this wont make much difference and both pictures will be of equal size and clarity.

Sketches

Some quick sketches of the layout and colour scheme of the admission area and the shop shelving.

Interior signage

Signs Express custom make reception and directional signs. Some examples of these:

Five signs need to be made for the space, these are:
1. Welcome
2. Entrance/ Exhibition Entrance
3. Gift Shop
4. Thank you for visiting
5. Fossil Walks

Examples of what these may look like are as follows.

Bespoke desk

This bespoke desk is designed with the customer in mind. Clearly showing that it is for admissions, this also looks quite formal. A price list and the museum logo can be inserted into the black frames on the side of the desk. Having the price list in the front of the desk will be affective as it will be in clear view of the customer and will be out of the way in a small space with high traffic volumes going through at times. The stripes round the bottom of the desk is in keeping with the main design of the room which will make it flow well through the room.
The back of the desk has been divided into 3 compartments which can be used to store files and useful information for staff such as current vouchers and deals etc. The top compartment can be used to tidy away the electronics for the till.  The front of the desk is raised enough so the till is more protected and only a small amount of the till is visable from the front.

Clarke Rendell design various furniture for commercial spaces. They also custom make furniture, inparticular they make bespoke reception desks. Therefore this company would be able to custom make my design of the admission/ fossil walk desks.

Paints

Auburn Falls
Auburn Falls
Indian Ivy 1
Indian Ivy 3
Sunny Savannah 5
Pure Black

Paint colours that will be used in the design to accompy the sillhouettes to create the full atmosphere.

Flooring

This hardwood flooring is durable and can be easily cleaned. The colouring will fit with the design well and bring a warmth to the space.

Stencils

These stencils are specially designed for walls and come in two different sizes. Both sizes can be used in the design. The larger will be used on the wall behind the gift shop desk. The smaller ones will be used above the shelving units.
14cm x 21cm
44cm x 62cm
These will will used for the shop side of the space instead of projection. Reasons for using stenciling are they are cheaper than many projectors that would be needed for the design. Stencils work well for the design as there isnt as much need for these images to change and the stencils of the sillhouettes will give a more fun feel to the atmosphere.
A selection of the stencils can be viewed in this post.

Projectors

This projector will be included into the design. It can be attached to the ceiling to stay out of the way of customers. Two projectors will be used, one for the left and right walls in the admission area that can be used to show any pictures or films for queuing customers.
Hung on the ceiling, at a distance of 4 metres from the wall, the image size is 200 width x 150 height.
In the shop area the sillhouettes will be created by stenciling.

Concepts

Two concepts have been chosen to decide between.

The first concept is looking into putting dinosaur images onto the walls in the form of sillouettes. I have chosen to use sillhouettes as it will contrast well with bright colours to make them stand out. It shouldnt be scary for children and is also relevant to all ages. It will be accompanied by vivid colours and striped patterns to make an interesting effect and fun atmosphere.
The sillouettes could be projected onto walls or be painted. Projection may be better as the pictures could be changed at any time to suit any event or season. For example a film could be shown or moving pictures.

The second concept is based on using models in the space to bring the dinosaur theme into the space more. Dinosaur models would be placed in the new admission area to bring interest when queuing. I like the idea of contrasting the models with an urban theme. This would give a very different feel and atmospher to the room and generate more interest.
The only problem with this is in peak season they could be easily damaged, also they may scare children.

I have chosen to use the sillhouettes concept as it is more appropriate for the museum.

Mood Board

My mood board, inspiration for the project. My inspiration has mainly come from Dinosaur Isle, looking at it's colours scheme, atmosphere, it's logo and inside the museum itself.
I have also looked at the natural history museum and how it displays its dinosaur related gifts. I have also looked into furniture that will fit the scheme.

Natural History Museum shop

The Natural History museum's shop appears very nutural and simple with the same colours throughout. It is also quite dramatic with the high ceilings, pillars and large hanging light fittings.

The dinosaur section of the shop is quite colourful, possibly to attract customers. I like the large wall coverings abover the shelves that are displayed with sillhouettes of dinosaurs on. It makes the design more interesting and bold.

The earth section of the shop appears very modern with the display cases and fittings, even the lighting above. The colours are quite dull but this makes the items in the shop stand out more. The display stands for the gemstones are interesting and something to think about including in my design.

Warwick castle shop design

"The fantastic medieval backdrop of stone walls and heavy flooring provided the perfect historical canvas for a shop space with a real difference."

The spectactular ceiling is the basis for this design and has been used to the shop's advantadge to give it a wow factor. The deep red colouring draws attention and the furniture all matches in with the medieval theme.

This design is interesting as the ceiling is a main part of it. A ceiling design or covering could be an idea to look into and possibly include in my final design.

SMYK store design

"The overall objective was to create a contemporary feel, inject some energy and also find the best way to merchandise SMYK’s dual offering of apparel and toys."

A simple yet effective design based on bright coloured furniture/ display stands and light surroundings. The brightness of this space gives a very inviting and friendly atmosphere.

This effect could be transferred into my final design for Dinosaur Isle's gift shop to try and create a fun and friendly atmosphere.
